Ghana 2024

Count down to Ghana 2024

Mid April 2024 and only 75 days until 75 of our Year 10 and Year 11 pupils leave the UK on their two week volunteering trip to Ghana with African Adventures.

On Thursday 11 April 2024, we welcomed a trip host to Deer Park from African Adventures, the company with whom our teams will be travelling to Ghana. Imani, Senior Trip Host, is visiting the UK from Zanzibar and he spoke to our pupils about his experiences of pupils visiting Africa on school trips and what our pupils can expect when they arrive in Ghana. Imani also talked about the importance of respecting the local culture whilst they are there and how to make the most of their amazing experience.

Harriet (Year 10) said "Imani was influential and charismatic - I am looking forward to going to Ghana," and Rosie (Year 11) commented "Imani's talk was informative. We know how to be respectful of the culture whilst in Ghana. We've been planning it for a long time, so I can't wait to go!"

Information Meeting

Miss Bluett, Geography teacher and previous Ghana trip leader, is holding a meeting on Thursday 2 May in the Main Hall, 3.30-4.30pm, for all the pupils going on this volunteering trip to Ghana's rural Volta area. They will be looking into the volunteer roles and what to expect on their first day 'on project'. It is important that all our Ghana volunteers attend, so they are fully prepared for the work they will be doing when there. Pupils need to come prepared to get involved in discussions and bring along any questions they have about the trip.

Donations

Our teams would be grateful for any donations of items that could be used by the four schools we will be working with in Ghana. For example, notebooks, reading books appropriate for primary level, pens, pencils, pencil cases and school bags. Good quality second-hand items are also fine.

We can also take items for the children and families in the local community, such as toys, games, balls, frisbees etc., sanitary products (no tampons), soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shoes, sports kit... lots of things are welcomed!

Please drop any donations to Reception in a bag clearly labelled 'Ghana donation'. Thank you. If you have any queries about donations, please email ghana2024@deerparkschool.net.
