Bee Hotel

Creation of a bee hotel by Year 8 Science class

As an end of year project, Year 8 Science class 8A4 have created a bee hotel and written an article to share the news about their project.

Rationale:

Bees are an endangered species because of diseases, pesticides and climate change.

We rely on bees to pollinate many of our crops, and for honey. Without bees to pollinate our crops, we would have a very limited amount of food or farmers would have to pay trillions of pounds to get crops pollinated. This would lead to another increase in food costs.

So, we decided to build a bee hotel to give the bees somewhere to hibernate that is safe. We wanted to do our bit to help the decline in bee numbers.

Some the foods that we would have less of include:

  • Mango
  • Carrots
  • Apple
  • Broccoli
  • Avocado
  • Coffee
  • Cocoa (chocolate!)
  • Watermelon
  • Raspberries
  • Brussel sprouts

Method:

  1. We researched the issue of bee numbers and the threats to bees. We decided that we could build a bee hotel.
  2. We decided on a design for the bee hotel, using recycled wood and materials collected from around the school grounds.
  3. We used the cane, sticks and recycled flower pots to make the pods for the bees to live in.
  4. Design teacher Mr Hoare very kindly put together the external structure of the bee hotel, including the lovely The Honey Hotel sign.
  5. We coated the hotel with wood protector.
  6. We put the pots into the hotel and filled any gaps with sticks and bark to make it stable.
  7. The Honey Hotel is now ready to be installed in a sunny, quiet area of the school grounds.

We found making a bee hotel an enjoyable, fun experience. It was educational and good to be able to make something that will help save some bees.

Science class 8A4's teacher Mrs Clark commented: 'It was so lovely to see the class work together to make such a wonderful resource for the bees. We need to raise awareness of the problem and, as 8A4 have done, do something to help! I hope that The Honey Hotel will be a home for some bees on the Deer Park site for years to come, and the pupils can see their work and feel proud!'
