School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability for the school. As the school is an Academy, the Governors are also directors of the company that owns the school. The Governors work closely with the Headteacher to agree the strategic direction of the school and make decisions about balancing resources.
The key functions of the Governing Body are to:
- set the aims and objectives for the school
- set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
- set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
- monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
- be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher.
Following a rigorous assessment in March 2017, the governing body of Cirencester Deer Park School was re-accredited for the prestigious award, Governor Mark, which they had first achieved in 2013. This is a nationally recognised quality mark and to achieve it, members of the school’s governing body used a comprehensive and challenging self-evaluation toolkit to reflect on the impact of their governance on the school and its development.
Most of the members of the Governing Body are either current or former parents of pupils of the school, giving them a strong insight into the school and a strong desire to engage in its continuing development. The following profiles are designed to introduce the governors and to show the range of experience they bring to the school.

Governor since 2013. Chair of Second Step mental health charity and Non Executive Board Director for Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust. Considerable experience of working with the private sector as a Director at Business in the Community and as an Expert Adviser to the OECD. Former Chair of Governors at a local primary school.
Parent Governor since July 2012. Teacher in the primary sector. One child currently at Deer Park. Member of the Curriculum Committee. Policy Review Group and the Self Assessment Group.
Governor since 2016. Reporting Actuary in the finance department of the Cirencester-based wealth management company, St James's Place. Treasurer of the CDPS Enrichment Fund.
Parent Governor since April 2014 and has one child at Deer Park. Works for Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust as a Podiatry Clinical Lead for Cotswolds and Stroud.
Parent Governor since December 2017 with two children at Deer Park. Attended Deer Park herself and has 20 years of experience teaching in the Primary Sector. Currently a Special Education Needs Coordinator at a Primary School in Cheltenham. Recently completed a postgraduate certificate in Educational Leadership.
One child at Deer Park. MD of digital marketing and web design agency. Extensive involvement in local youth football and FA-qualified referee. Student Mentor for troubled teenagers, as part of county-wide programme run by GFirstLEP in conjunction with the University of Gloucestershire.
