Primary Sport at Cirencester Deer Park School, Term 2 2019

We have had a highly successful second term of Primary Sport at Cirencester Deer Park School, hosting a Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Festival, Year 3/4 Indoor Athletics and Year 5/6 Indoor Athletics.

The first event of the term was the Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Festival on Tuesday 5 November 2019, involving over 80 pupils from Powell’s, Sapperton, Siddington, Stratton and Kemble primary schools. Two groups of ability were created with eight teams,  allowing pupils to access the correct level and play fun and competitive matches.  Despite the tricky weather conditions the event ran smoothly and, having completing a rugby training meeting and researching the rules, our excellent Year 9 Young Leaders showed great levels of officiating expertise, either in refereeing or running the line.

Year 5/6 Indoor Athletics

The Year 3/4 Indoor Athletics was our second event on Monday 25 November with Stratton, Kemble, Siddington and Sapperton primary schools. Our Young Leaders either officiated or managed track events, including a range of relay races such as the Obstacle Relay, Under-Over Relay and Hurdle Relay. The Field events included the Vertical Jump, Speed Bounce, Foam Javelin, Standing Long Jump, Ball Throw and Five Strides. Congratulations to Stratton who became Large Schools' champion and Kemble who became Small Schools' champion.

Freya (Young Leader): “I really enjoyed leading the Five Strides event at the Year 3/4 Indoor Athletics competition because I got to demonstrate it and I felt like I was a teacher."

On Monday 2 December we held the Year 5/6 Indoor Athletics event, which was a School Games qualifier for the Area finals taking place in 2020. Chesterton, Powell’s, Stratton, Kemble, Siddington and Sapperton took part. Our Young Leaders again performed superbly in their roles related to officiating and managing the track and field events. With the exception of the Hurdle Relay, which was replaced by the 6 Lap Relay, and the Five Strides activity replaced with Standing Triple Jump, the track and field events were the same as those for the Year 3/4 the previous week. Congratulations to Powell’s who became Large Schools' champion and Kemble who became Small Schools' champion.

Nina (Young Leader): “The events this term were fun! I really liked the Year 3/4 Indoor Athletics competition because my job role was results recording. The younger pupils looked up to us as role models.”

Young Leader Molly: “I really liked the indoor athletics events because I experienced the organisation and precision of officiating a competitive athletics event."

In addition to these three exciting events at Deer Park, PE Teacher and Primary Sports Coordinator Mr Cumming also visited Siddington CofE Primary School this term to teach 5 Gymnastics lessons to the 'Robins' Reception class.  A range of gymnastic skills were taught, related to balances, travelling and using different apparatus such as a bench. Each lesson related to the British Gymnastics Awards scheme. Mr Cumming said “The pupils did extremely well in each lesson and completed a range of different gymnastic challenges. For many this was their first time completing gymnastics moves and it was pleasing to see them progress so well during the unit of lessons."
