Primary Sport at Cirencester Deer Park School, Term 1 2019

The 2019-2020 academic year kicked off with highly competitive and fun Primary Sport at Cirencester Deer Park School!

On Monday 23 September 2019 we hosted a Year 5/6 Football Tournament. There were over 80 pupils from our local cluster of primary schools: Chesterton, Powell’s, Sapperton, Siddington, Stratton and Kemble. The teams competed first in group stages and then in a knockout competition, tiered to the position each team finished in the group. There were some great football skills on show, complementing the excellent playing surface created by our groundsman. This primary event involved our Year 9 Young Leaders, who showed great enthusiasm and commitment, despite the tricky weather conditions. Our pupils refereed games and recorded results throughout.

The second event of the school year was Year 3/4 Multi Skills on Monday 7 October 2019 which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. More than 90 pupils from our local cluster of schools took part. Our Year 9 Young Leaders were split into small groups and tasked with planning an appropriate activity for groups of 8 to 10 primary school pupils - Football dribbling, Hockey passing, Netball passing, Obstacle relay and Benchball. They produced detailed plans which allowed them to effectively lead their station. Due to the horrible weather, we decided that the event would take place in the Sports Hall and Gymnasium and our excellent Young Leaders adapted their activities well to the new surroundings.

Our third event of the term was Year 5/6 Quicksticks Hockey on Monday 14 October 2019. This School Games event involved a wider range of primary schools within the Cotswold District and was highly competitive, with some great hockey skills on show. The group stages were followed by tiered knockout competitions based on where a school team finished in their group. The winning teams qualified for the County final later in the school year.

Isla (Year 9 Young Leader): “It was really fun and has been a great experience so far. My favourite event was the football tournament because I love football!"

Freya (Year 9 Young Leader): “The events went really well and were very productive. My favourite event was multi skills because we got to plan our own activity”.

In addition to the events at Deer Park during Term 1, PE Teacher and Primary Sports Coordinator Mr Cumming visited Powell’s Primary School to teach Tag Rugby to two Year 4 classes. A range of rugby skills were taught to the pupils, including passing, overlapping and defending. Mr Cumming said that “the pupils showed excellent enthusiasm and learning power during the sessions and challenged themselves to perform a variety of rugby skills in small sided activities and games."
