Spring Showcase 2019

What a fantastic evening!

On Tuesday 26 March 2019 a real variety of musical items was performed at our Expressive Arts Spring Showcase by pupils in all year groups, showing a passion and flare for singing, dancing and instrument playing!

The showcase concert opened with some traditional songs played by our Flute group. As ever, these pupils were well rehearsed and performed beautifully. The group set the standard for the whole concert, with all performances this year being incredibly high in quality. This included the youngest members of our school, our Year 7 pupils, who were involved in a range of acts in their first Showcase. We initially saw Year 7 pupils performing with the Junior Singers, performing a mash up of ‘Hold Back The River’, ‘I Will Wait’ and ‘Fix You’.

Mrs Gleed, Head of Expressive Arts, said "It was so lovely to see our youngsters enjoying being on stage. The membership of Junior Singers has grown with our Year 7 intake and it was great to see so many smiling faces! They were very well rehearsed. Fantastic performances from both Junior Singers and Singers +."

Singers + performed a very mature and professional version of ‘Run To You’ by Pentatonix. Pupils really created a wonderful atmosphere with their clear, warm vocals.

The Steel Band, who are regular performers at Expressive Arts events and clearly a favourite with the audience, didn’t fail to impress with their performance and finished to loud cheers when they completed a UB40 medley. There were new faces in this group too.

Amy (Year 11):  "I have really enjoyed playing in the Steel Band over the last few years, I have been in the band since Year 8. It is a really interesting and unusual instrument to learn. The Showcase was a fantastic last performance for me; I am going to college next year and I will miss playing in the band."

Jaden (Year 9): "Playing music brings a lot of joy to my life. I saw the Steel Band play at previous concerts, it looked like great fun so I wanted to join. Mr Cook has been very supportive with learning the drums."

As well as some outstanding harmony work from Key Stage 4 duets and trio items, audience members were impressed to see DP Dancers perform to pop song ‘Thursday’ by Jess Glynne and an Advanced Dancers group performed a contemporary routine to ‘Lost in the Waves’ sung by former pupil Evie Bennett; pupils told the tragic story of a father struggling to keep afloat in the sea whilst searching for his son through contemporary movements.

Chloe (Year 10) said "I really enjoyed being involved in the Showcase, I have been a part of DP Dancers since Year 7, so to then be a part of a smaller dance group was great. I got to experience a different style of dancing, a new routine which had a story to it."

The night ended with the Key Stage 4 band Cook's Crew, who had performed in the November 2018 Talent Show. The band performed upbeat, entertaining songs, 'I Got You (I Feel Good)' by James Brown and 'Jonny Be Goode' by Chuck Berry and the audience found themselves clapping and singing along to both tunes. The band created a fantastic atmosphere which left everybody leaving the evening on a high.

One parent said "Once again, we were blown away by the standard of the performances and the sheer talent exuding from the young performers. But over and above that it was an excellent example to all of us of just what people can achieve if they commit themselves, practise and generally work hard at something. What a wonderful celebration and platform for all that is important to achieving “success” in the truest sense of the word!"

‘I am very grateful to members of our Expressive Arts team for the creative challenges they present to our pupils and I am always impressed by how well our children respond and support each other. I thoroughly enjoyed the Showcase. The programme was rich, diverse and entertaining. Congratulations to everyone involved!’
