BBC Young Reporter: World Book Day

Celebration of reading

Story by our BBC Young Reporters - Robert, Ethan and Sebastian - on Wednesday 7 March 2019.

World Book Day is a great event that promotes reading and encourages children to keep reading. This amazing annual celebration is organised by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and takes place on 7 March.

Every year, authors write exclusive short books that can be purchased for free using a special World Book Day token. Alternatively this token can be used to get £1 off a book or audiobook. On World Book Day, pupils are given these tokens by their teachers.

On World Book Day, some schools up the fun by letting the children dress up as their favourite character from their most beloved books. Sometimes the teachers will also dress up as well. At Cirencester Deer Park School this year there will be a Key Stage 3 Inter Tutor Group World Book Day Quiz run by the English Faculty; we are also celebrating World Book Day by holding a Readathon for Read for Good, where pupils are sponsored to read for a specific period of time. Following two shorter Year 7 Readathons today, Wednesday 6 March 2019, a group of Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 pupils will be in the PLC (our library) and reading all day on World Book Day!

World Book Day tokens will be handed out to pupils and this year pupils have an amazing range of good books to choose from, and lots of shops to buy them from.

Cirencester Deer Park School also has a great library, known as the PLC, with loads of books to borrow, a number of computers, and board games you can play during the hour lunch break on World Book Day, or any other day.

Overall, World Book Day is a wonderful event to be cherished, because it helps so many people get books. World Book Day is awesome, so enjoy it! It's only one day a year!!
