Learning CPR

Did you know that across the UK fewer than 1 in 10 people who have a cardiac arrest outside of hospital survives?

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is part of a movement aiming to make the UK a Nation of Lifesavers, where learning CPR and other lifesaving skills is a normal part of life. 80% of the cardiac arrests outside hospital happen in the home – often in front of families and loved ones. Every second counts, because a delay quickly reduces a person’s chance of survival.

In 2017 Cirencester Deer Park School applied for a BHF CPR training kit offered to all secondary schools and it is now onsite. The message that comes through strongly from the training DVD Call, Push, Rescue is that it is better to do something than nothing in the case of someone who has had a cardiac arrest.

Between now and the end of the Summer Term, our PSHEe team will be rolling out CPR training in Global Citizenship and PSHEe lessons to all pupils in Years 9-11; in Autumn 2018 we will start with Year 8 pupils. The BHF advises that the training is suitable for pupils 12 years old and over. During an upcoming INSET Day, additional Cirencester Deer Park staff will be learning how to perform CPR.

On Thursday 25 January 2018 Mr Germaine was our first teacher to deliver CPR training to a Year 11 PSHEe class. By the end of the session all pupils had successfully carried out CPR on the inflatible manikins and some had, in addition, tried rescue breaths.

Knowing how to do CPR is, literally, a life skill.

We encourage everyone to learn CPR, even if Hands-Only CPR. A member of your family, a friend, a colleague or a stranger may need your help. An estimated one in five adults in the UK witness someone collapse who needs immediate CPR, yet the majority of people do not act. Do YOU want to know how to do CPR?
