Year 10 Music Tech

Finding out about the music business

On Thursday 23 March 2023, Year 10 pupils studying Music Technology were given the opportunity to visit The Sub Rooms in Stroud. 

Part of the content of the Music Technology Level 2 course that we offer as a Key Stage 4 option at Cirencester Deer Park School involves pupils learning about the music business and the roles and responsibilities of people who work in various aspects of the industry.

I was delighted when I was approached by Mrs Singh, who works at The Sub Rooms, offering an educational visit to look at what they do as a venue.

The morning of the visit started with a short presentation by Hugh Phillimore, Director of The Sub Rooms. He talked about how much they have achieved since he was appointed and how they have transformed the historic Sub Rooms into an excellent venue that is attracting some big name performers. He also said that his aim was to inspire our pupils to think about possible careers in the Music Technology industry.

After the initial presentation, we had a tour of the main performance space, The Ballroom, and found out a little about the building's history.

Pupils were divided into two groups and had talks with the Sound and Lighting engineers about how they use music technology in a performance context. We also had a demonstration of how amazing, with acoustic treatment and a bespoke very high-end sound system, music can sound in the venue; the bass reproduction was amazing and could be felt vibrating through the air of The Ballroom.

Following a tour of the venue and a break for lunch, we had a Q&A session with Mr Phillimore about his life in the music industry. He had some very colourful tales about working with artists such as Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison and many more.

In discussion with the pupils on our return trip, it was clear that the day had given them a valuable insight into a local venue and the people in it, who, behind the scenes, have a role in making a successful performance venue.

Supporting local music/arts venues is vital to an industry particularly hard-hit by the challenges of the last few years. Whether going to a gig, sharing an event with friends, meeting for a drink or something to eat, hiring a space, we can all play a part.
