National School Sport Week

Celebrating sport in schools

National School Sport Week is a huge celebration of everything that is great about PE and school sport, with schools across the country invited to take part in and celebrate Physical Education. It started in 2008 and thousands of schools and millions of pupils took part last year. For National School Sport Week 2022 (Monday 20 - Friday 24 June) the focus was on ensuring that there is a place for every young person to belong in school sport.

At Deer Park we were once again able to involve local community clubs and coaches to help us run our National School Sport Week. Our PE Faculty feel that it is important to encourage our pupils to do more sport in our local community. Once young people leave school, we want to encourage them to continue sport in some form throughout their lives, whether team or individual sports, whether in a competitive capacity or as a social choice. In addition to the obvious physical benefits, people who are regularly active generally enjoy better mental wellbeing

In National School Sport Week, we offered our pupils the opportunity to experience different and exciting sports and physical activities that we do not normally teach in school, such as Zumba, Martial Arts, Personal Fitness, Self Defence, Golf, Girls Rugby and Handball. Pupils have the chance to improve their mental, social and physical wellbeing as well as building key fitness components such as strength and endurance. Providing these new enriching opportunities enables our pupils to also develop key skills such as team work, resilience and respect.

Mr Cumming, PE Faculty, commented 'It has been great to be able to run our National School Sport Week like we used to pre-COVID. It is important that our pupils have access to local community clubs and organisations in order for them to be able to continue enjoying sport and physical activity outside of school. It has been a fun-filled, action-packed week of activities!'

Gabby in (new) Year 8 said “It was really good! It is fun doing different activities and today I did fitness work with a Catalyst gym trainer.

Dylan in (new) Year 8 said 'It has been fun doing different activities this week. Our class had a martial arts and handball lesson. I really enjoyed the martial arts as I was able to learn new skills.'

Our thanks to the local community sports clubs who came in to school to support us in National School Sport Week:
