Pupil Services

We recognise that as individuals, pupils have different needs and respond to challenges in different ways. Our Pupil Services team is designed to ensure that all pupils can thrive at Deer Park. This large and experienced team includes the pastoral leadership team, tutors, support staff and 'expert' professionals. They play an important part in the development of all children and work closely with parents and external agencies. The team provides:

  • essential pastoral support
  • rewards and sanctions
  • first aid
  • counselling
  • mediation
  • conflict resolution
  • behaviour or anger management
  • literacy and numeracy support
  • dyslexia and English as an additional language workshop.

KS3 Pupil Services

We aim to achieve smooth transitions. Key Stage 3 pupils are managed in their year groups. On joining us, and following our induction programme, which includes visits to primary schools and discussions with teachers and parents, pupils are assigned to mixed ability tutor groups. Tutors, working with the Head of Key Stage 3 and Pastoral Managers, provide the first point of contact and are, in the first instance, responsible for the pupils’ welfare and individual learning plans.

In Yr 6 we meet with teachers from feeder Primary schools and identify projects and activities which will encourage pupils through the transition into secondary school.

As a part of our ‘Preparation for Learning’, pupils, towards the end of Year 9, are reorganised into smaller tutor groups and, in Key Stage 4, they are led and managed by the Head of Key Stage 4 and a team of Learning Co-ordinators. These smaller ‘learning communities’, reflect the pupils’ growth in maturity and prepares them for life beyond Deer Park. In each, there is a strong commitment to supporting learning and a positive ethos is established through a personal development programme and effective rewards system.

KS4 Pupil Services

As a part of our ‘Preparation for Learning’, pupils, towards the end of Year 9, are reorganised into smaller tutor groups and, in Key Stage 4, they are led and managed by the Head of Key Stage 4 and a team of Learning Co-ordinators. These smaller ‘learning communities’, reflect the pupils’ growth in maturity and prepares them for life beyond Deer Park. In each, there is a strong commitment to supporting learning and a positive ethos is established through a personal development programme and effective rewards system.

Our Key Stage 4 tutors and mentors provide a first point of contact, but also offer guidance through increased one-to-one and small group mentoring. These sessions focus on targets and objectives in the pupils’ individual learning plans. Additional support for academic achievement is available through our targeting of individual pupils, either in faculties or at a whole school level. Pupils are also actively encouraged to participate in a range of induction activities to ease the transition from school to college, or work, and to foster a commitment to life long learning.
