Year 9 pupils at Cirencester Deer Park School have been involved in a very special cross curricular First World War experience centred on Michael Morpurgo’s ‘War Horse’. Over the last few weeks pupils have participated in a variety of activities, which culminated in a trip to London on Thursday 15 September to the Imperial War Museum and to see the award winning stage production.
We are proud to announce that Cirencester Deer Park School has achieved the full International School Award accreditation for the third time. The new award, 2011-14, celebrates the School’s international work with its partner schools and colleges across the globe. Headteacher, Chiquita Henson, and Governors of Deer Park School believe strongly in enriching the curriculum and appreciate the benefits that international partnerships can bring to pupils, staff, the school and community at large.
In June 2011, the Languages Faculty was successful in its bid for some funding from the ‘Schools of Creativity’ scheme to support the promotion of language learning. Following an initial launch, a group of 24 pupils in Year 9 worked enthusiastically at weekly meetings after school to familiarise themselves with a range of film scripts in other languages. The pupils then sub-divided themselves into smaller acting groups and selected excerpts from famous Hollywood blockbusters ranging from ‘Shrek’ and ‘Star Wars’ to ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Pupils were encouraged to work independently in a number of different ways. For example, some groups decided to adapt the scripts using vocabulary they had learnt in their Languages lessons, other groups worked hard on pronunciation of the original scripts, and all pupils worked together to decide what sort of costumes they would need and what acting skills they would use.
On Thursday 25 August, the ‘Class of 2011’, received confirmation of the outcomes of all of their hardwork. Their results reflect the commitment staff and pupils make to ensuring we can all achieve more than we first think we can. As a year group, they met and exceeded our expectations. As we welcome pupils back after the summer break, we are delighted to congratulate the ‘Class of 2011’, and pupils in other year groups who took some of their GCSEs early, on their achievements.
On Monday 5 September Cirencester College and Deer Park School opened a new zebra crossing to ensure the safe passage of pupils and other pedestrians across the main college drive. The welcome addition of railings guides the pupils away from the main entrance towards the zebra crossing and, significantly, reduces the potential for conflict with cars, buses and cyclists.

Our congratulations go to the ‘Class of 2011’. We are absolutely thrilled with our pupils’ achievements this year.
This term our pupils have demonstrated all that Deer Park stands for by achieving more than they first thought possible in our annual Enrichment Week. You can read about the challenges they faced and enjoyment they had . In particular, I congratulate our pupils in our ‘new’ Year 11, who impressed local employers with their resilience, resourcefulness, confidence, skills and readiness to take on responsibility. They were definitely a credit to the school and their parents.
We hope your son/daughter enjoyed his/her Induction Days on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 July. As a year group, our new pupils certainly made a good impression. Our staff enjoyed working with them and our local MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, who coincidentally visited the School on Friday 15 July, commented specifically on the calm and purposeful atmosphere within the School and the high levels of engagement including Year 7.
