On Tuesday 6 March Cirencester Deer Park School welcomed pupils and teachers from the Reitaku Junior High School, Mizunami–shi, Gifu, Japan. The sun shone brightly and Deer Park School looked its best for our Japanese visitors, who were in the UK for a week-long study period. Mr Kikuro Kitaoka and Ms Nana Kimura accompanied 35 Japanese boys and girls to our school for the day.
Twenty students from Year 10 recently put their design, technology, engineering and maths talents to the test in a fascinating challenge set by educational charity, The Smallpeice Trust. Working in small groups, students enhanced their aptitude for problem solving, creativity, design and engineering by taking part in the day-long project called The Wind Turbine Challenge.
Our Key Stage 3 Charities Week took place 6-10 February. Following a successful Key Stage 4 Charities Week before Christmas, Key Stage 3 were determined to follow their lead and raise the bar to raise more money. Tutor groups in Years 7, 8 and 9 rose to the challenge and ran numerous stalls and fund raising ideas including the traditional Cake Sale, Guess the Name of the Teddy and Guess the Number of Sweets in the Jar, and the popular ‘Silent’ Disco. The money is still being counted and there will be a prize for the tutor group raising the most.
Today, Thursday 1 March, is National Allocation Day. Following the preferences they made in the Autumn Term, Year 6 pupils across the country will learn which secondary school they have been allocated for September 2012. We are delighted to welcome the pupils and their parents who have been allocated places here at Deer Park and we look forward to working with you over the next five years. You will shortly receive a letter from us extending our welcome and advising you of the next steps.
On 24 February, forty-three of Deer Park's highest performers spent a sunny day at Oxford University learning more about student life. The trip raised aspirations as pupils realised that studying at Oxford was within their reach, but it also helped them to appreciate that they will have to work hard to get a place. Quotes such as “I want to go home and start studying” were heard on the coach trip home!
