Graphics

All pupils undertake Graphic modules in years 7, 8 and 9 and have the opportunity to further study the subject at GCSE level in Key Stage 4. The nature of Graphics as a subject provides skills which cross the subject boundaries of Design and Technology, Art and Design, ICT and Media Studies.

Skills learnt in Key Stage 3 Graphics modules enhances pupil's ability to present, compose and manipulate visual imagery. Supporting learning in other subject areas such as Geography, History, Science and ICT. Helping to build life long learning skills in the area of visual literacy.

KS3 Graphics

Year 7 Graphics
Graphics in Year 7 is an introduction to a range of graphical drawing techniques that allow pupils to generate a variety of three dimensional designs. Throughout the module there is a focus on accuracy which is reinforced through each technique covered. The booklets pupils complete throughout the module are designed to act as a resource throughout KS3, enabling pupils to transfer skills learnt in graphics to other subject areas.

Year 8 Graphics
Pupils are asked to develop a range of advertising and packaging materials for a specific business of their choice. The module requires pupils to be independent learners accurately designing and making appropriate products that are relevant to their chosen company. There are very few limitations and pupils are encouraged to be creative and imaginative in their approach. Each pupil is required to present their project to the class at the end of the module.

Year 9 Graphics
Outline of modules undertaken in Year 9. Designing and making promotional materials for one of three companies: Thistle Publications, Zeon Computers or Waterfall Records. The main item produced is a promotional folder/container for the items designed and made. 5 homeworks/ learning exercises undertaken in the 6 week module. Final presentation of designs and made products made by each pupil.

 

KS4 Graphics

Graphic Products GCSE
Syllabus undertaken: Full Course GCSE Exam board: AQA Syllabus No: 3543

The Year 10 GCSE course involves working with six modules of work involving a full range of Graphic Product processes and techniques. Modules include:

  1. Working with the design process. Drawing and illustration techniques together with digital photography.
  2. Printing technology including a stamp design project and presentation promotion folder design exercise.
  3. A packaging design brief using computer aided design and manufacture techniques.
  4. Designing and working with plastics. A multi media exercise.
  5. Product design briefs.Pupils take one design brief from five set including a mobile ( hanging variety ) book, calendar and board game or greeting items design.
  6. A mini coursework task in preparation for year 11 coursework. This task is set with consultation with the teacher.

The two year full GCSE Graphic Product course requires pupils to undertake the Year 10 course together with a coursework project in Year 11 worth 60% of the final mark. A final examination is undertaken in the Summer Term of Year 11. The theory paper is 2 hours in length with 8 questions. This tests the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of Graphics with practical questions on A3 paper and is worth 40% of the final mark.

Year 10 modules 1,2 3 and 4 have end of module tests. Modules 5 and 6 are related to the coursework task in year 11.

GCSE Graphic Products Full course in Year 11 requires pupils to produce a coursework project and sit a final theory examination. The GCSE Graphic Products Full course leads on to AS, A2 and Vocational course qualifications at further education institutions.
