Pupil Services and Sport

Monday 4 April 2011

It has been a very busy term and sport has been a key factor in both the Inclusion Centre and Pupil Services.

INCLUSION NEWS

Members of the Inclusion team and Key Stage 4 have been finishing the behaviour management programme for identified Year 8s called ‘Raise Your Game’ which deals with organisation, team-work, communication, setting goals, decision making and anger management. The six week programme will take place both in the classroom and out on the football pitch.

The other new programme is Head First, which is an ‘in house’ project taking over from Cheltenham Town FC’s Know Yer Balls programme. Head First deals with confrontation, alcohol and drugs, relationships and male health. The programme will also be delivered in the classroom and football pitch.

Staying with football, Inclusion and Pupil Services, Paul Cooper has been overseeing the running of the Year 7 school football team this term. The key contribution, however, has come from young coaches Ethan Lewis and Dan Warriner (Year 11). With their hard work and dedication the Year 7 boys have been able to field two teams with over 30 boys representing the school this term, around one third of the boys in Year 7.

The Thursday lunchtime SAC Club (Social Activities Club) has proved immensely popular with over 20 children attending. A basketball team has been developed from the Club with children running their own team under the watchful eye of Year 9 coach Georgina Day. Mr Cooper says of the club, “The basketball team under Captain Callum Gardner have stayed behind after school every day this week to practise and design the team’s logo and kit. They also have their first away fixture lined up against Thomas Keble’s Activity club. The basketball team is made up of SEN children and others who would not normally be involved in school teams.” He added, “The commitment the children have all shown has been inspiring.”
