PE Faculty in Focus

15 June 2010

What a month to have a Faculty in Focus! Although sport is constantly on the television, the next month is extra special...

No-one can fail to have noticed the Football FIFA World Cup (11 June - 11 July 2010) on the television. Already there have been some amazing games displaying team passion and amazing talent. Even if the football does not interest you, you can brush up on the rules of the game, the geography of the countries, or learn to identify the flags from participating countries. Can you name all 32 countries taking part and pin point them on a map of the world?

If football doesn't excite you, there is Wimbledon to catch your interest (21 June - 4 July 2010). This intense sport with individuals competing against each other is seen as the pinnacle of the tennis circuit. Although the spectators appear to be more self controlled, you cannot fail to see the passion, drive and determination of the players.

If cricket is more your thing, then South Africa are in the West Indies until the end of the month. Look out for the Asia Cup (15-24 June) being played in Sri Lanka, and Australia in England (17 June – 3 July).

The upcoming European Athletics Championships (26 July – 1 August) in Barcelona is an event to look forward to

So what about sport at Deer Park?

Only last week we celebrated the success of our Key Stage 3 at the Celebration of Achievement Evening for pupils who have demonstrated a dedication to teams, hard work in lessons and a desire to be the best they can.

This week we have a large number of Cricket and Rounders fixtures, a number of pupils wake-boarding and both Primary District Sports and Year 7 and Year 8 District Athletics. Next week is the Prince of Wales Athletics Championships in Cheltenham with approximately 65 pupils participating from the new Year 8 to 11 pupils.

And finally in National Sports Week (28 June - 2 July) we have the Area Sports Primary Athletics, coaching from national hockey coaches and of course Deer Park's biggest sporting event of the year, Sports Day, on Thursday 1st July.
