On Tuesday 27 September a group of Year 10 pupils from Cirencester Deer Park School visited the 29 Regiment RLC at the Duke of Gloucester Barracks, South Cerney. The visit was part of the Regiment’s Community Engagement Week and our pupils had the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of life ‘behind the wire’ and were invited to undertake a variety of challenges.
Whilst learning about the various roles within this Regiment, our pupils participated in a survival task where team work was essential. They needed to draw on their knowledge of Science to be successful in starting a fire; needed to protect themselves from the elements using branches and showed support for others when resolving the mock disaster situation.
The highlight of the day was at the Camouflage and Concealment stand. Here our pupils were introduced to the various methods used and were excited to be able to participate in a concealment task. Five pupils were dressed in camouflage uniform and set the task of hiding in the long grass. The others were asked to identifying the location of the pupils from a distance of 20 meters. Pupils were astounded when they could not spot their friends – even though they knew they were in the long grass in front of them! Year 10 pupil, Thomas Fearn couldn’t believe his eyes whilst trying to capture them on film. It was certainly a case of now you see then – now you don’t!

Now you see them...

...now you don't!
The pupils were thoroughly welcomed by the regiment and had an exciting and though provoking day. We are extremely grateful to the staff at the 29th Regiment for making this trip possible.
