A group of Yr 10 and 11 pupils from Deer Park recently participated in Model United Nations Alfrink (MUNA), an annual simulation of the United Nations, for the 6th time.
For three days, students from several countries in Europe gathered at Alfrink College in Zoetermeer (The Netherlands) to debate global issues. During the conference students were the delegates of the United Nations. We were very proud to be one of only three schools in the UK to participate, and worked alongside pupils from Spain, Netherlands, Germany and France.
The pupils were discussing various issues that would affect countries globally. Like the UN, MUNA and its delegations decide on substantive and administrative issues, which are then debated with each pupil representing a particular country. Deer Park had pupil delegates representing Spain, Sri Lanka, Syria, Ukraine and the USA in the following councils:
The whole MUNA experience trip was a fantastic opportunity for global pupils to meet. Pupils and staff were hosted with Dutch families, and we were given a thoroughly warm welcome and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the families and staff that looked after us so well.
MUNA supports the Mae Tao Clinic and the Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF). Pupils raised money whilst participating in debating and during the closing ceremony were delighted to hear that their donations made a real impact. MUNA 2011 has helped sponsor a van of Burma Children Medical Fund and whilst we were busy debating in Zoetermeer on Thursday this van took ill patients to a big teaching hospital in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.
It’s not all work and no play... the pupils were able to meet up at the official MUNA party, where 300 pupils enjoyed themselves dancing away. It was great to see pupils from Spain, Netherlands, Germany and France all mixing together and enjoying the great atmosphere! Mr Connole and I will never forget the noise level!
