Mock Exam Results

Wednesday 12 January 2011

On Friday 7 January 2011, pupils in Year 11 waited anxiously for the results of the mock examinations they sat in December. Before moving into the Atrium, Chiquita Henson, Headteacher, and David Clarke, Head of Key Stage 4, reflected on the pupils' collective achievements and shared some of the headlines in an assembly designed to simulate the experience the pupils will go through in August when they will collect their actual GCSE results.

‘We are very pleased with our pupils in Year 11. Their mock exam results are very encouraging. Most of our pupils have got what they deserve and it is clear that many within the year group applied themselves very effectively to their revision,’ said Chiquita Henson, who added, ‘for a few, however, it has been an important wake up call and fortunately for them, their teachers were on hand to advise them on how to improve.’

During the mock exam period there were over 30 separate examinations and over 2000 individual grades were awarded. The mock exams are important. They provide our pupils with the opportunity to rehearse their revision strategies and examination techniques, and the outcomes they achieve reflect the progress they have made towards meeting their targets and highlight the areas they need to focus on for improvement. They also help to inform teachers’ planning and forecast grades. These will be shared with pupils and their parents in their interim reviews which will be published later this month before our Year 11 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 2 February.

David Clarke, who analyses the results, works closely with his colleagues and individual pupils to help pupils achieve their very best. He congratulated them on their achievements: ‘I am delighted with the progress so many of our pupils have already made, but we are equally keen to ensure they continue to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding and wish to reassure them and their parents that the team is here to support them and their learning over the remaining months of Year 11’. Also on hand were representatives from Cirencester College who were able to provide pertinent information, advice and guidance.

Our pupils are experienced in sitting GCSE exams and in Year 11 all pupils have already achieved at least one ‘real’ GCSE grade. Most have taken a number of module exams in Maths and Science, and a significant number will receive the outcomes of the GCSEs in English they took in November 2010 this week.
