October 2009 has been an exciting time in the Maths Faculty. Mrs Bond, Mr Vaughan and Mr van Wyk have been delighted to welcome Year 5 and 6 pupils from local primary schools to take part in our Crystal Maze Challenge. The challenge involves pupils completing number, shape and logic puzzles against the clock whilst developing their skills in team work, communication and problem solving. The first day saw a keenly fought competition between pupils from Powells which resulted in a very close finish. There was much fun in the final challenge where pupils compete in a ball pool to convert the time gained through the challenges to finding points amongst all the balls and balloons.
Mrs Stevens, the Head of Maths, has recently returned from a Comenius visit to Sweden. The faculty are excited to be taking a pivotal part in the first Comenius Regio project in the UK. This style of project sees not only partnerships between schools but also local authorities and business organisations. The major aim of the project is to increase enjoyment and achievement in Maths, Science and Technology as well as promoting uptake to these subjects at post 16 and university level. It was wonderful to meet pupils and colleagues from our partner school S:t Ilians Skola in Vasteras, Sweden and investigate the Swedish approach to learning and teaching in Mathematics. >> More about Comenius
