International School News

27th April 2010. Due to the volcanic ash cloud, our Dutch partner school in Zoetermeer, Alfrink College, had to cancel their visit to Deer Park earlier this month but we are pleased to announce that the visit is now confirmed for mid May and we look forward to greeting our friends and making new acquaintances. Our Dutch partners are particularly interested in our work with building learning power, the development of the structure of our lessons, and pupils understanding of their own learning preferences. Rebecca Lillington, our Innovations Co-ordinator, has put together an exciting programme for our visitors. We are also pleased to announce that we have been invited to attend the pupil Model United Nations (MUNA) Conference in Holland in 2011 with other schools and colleges from across Europe.

We continue to develop our International School portfolio. Most recently Fiona Moss, our Languages Advanced Skills Teacher, made a new contact with a Secondary School in Jerez. A link has been established with Year 8 Spanish classes where exchange of work and a DVD has been made. This link has been developed in conjunction with the Local Authority and we are particularly grateful to Linda Owen, the Primary Languages Advisor, for organizing the initial visit. The teaching of the Spanish language at Deer Park is a popular option and the link with Jerez provides the opportunity to enrich the languages experience for both the Spanish and ourselves.

Deer Park School has also been cordially invited to take part in the National Festival of School Theatre at the Bonci Theatre in Cesena, Italy 2010-11. Zoe Harrod, one of our Drama and English Teachers, will lead a visit in the near future. Initially it is hoped that she can job shadow an Italian colleague in order to ascertain the organisation and future contribution to the festival by her and a party of Deer Park pupils. The invitation highlights the high esteem and reputation that Deer Park Drama and Expressive Arts are held.

Opportunities for all pupils to achieve an International experience are available in the forthcoming ENRICHMENT WEEK 2010 where pupils can experience the culture and enrichment of another country. Countries being visited during Enrichment Week 2010 include Spain, France and Holland.

As part of our International School status, pupils have been working on a two year Comenius project, funded by the British Council and promoted by the EU. In early February, CDPS Comenius Ambassadors went to Germany to continue work on the “My Europe? Your Europe? Our Europe!” Comenius Project promoted by the EU. Our ambassadors visited Offene School Waldau in Kassel, along with pupils from KMS Puntigam Graz in Austria, to work on developing a visionary lesson in the ultimate European classroom. The Comenius ambassadors will now play a role in spreading their experiences throughout the school to help further develop Deer Park’s international ethos.
