Monday 18 July 2011
A group of 28 pupils opted to take part in a week of Water Sports locally in the Cotswolds. The objectives of the week were to experience a greater element of risk and challenge within water sports’ activities, whilst developing team work, leadership skills, communication skills and perseverance in both the tasks and against the elements! (Unfortunately it poured down during the afternoons on Tuesday 5 July and on Friday 8 July). During the week the pupils also had the chance to socialise with a group of people they would not normally meet around school.
The week consisted of 3 days at South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre where the pupils took part in taster sessions in sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing and raft building. They were with different pupils each time and faced different challenges in each activity. One of the best challenges I saw the group achieve was to fit 7 pupils on an open canoe and successfully launch it down the large wooden slide. They looked like a group of people on the log flume at Alton Towers but they only had each other to hold on to!
The other 2 days were spent at Ashton Keynes where the pupils took part in an orienteering task on one day and an afternoon of swimming and team games and the other day involved a 4 mile hike around the local area. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed these activities and really opened their eyes to what they could take part in locally in their own time.
By the end of the week the pupils were exhausted but they had had a great time!
Charlotte Innes said, ‘It was really enjoyable as I tried things I wouldn’t normally do.’
Ellie Boyle reflected, ‘Rafting was fun as we got to learn how to build a raft, work together to build and sail it, and then got to fall in!’
Samson Heywood commented, ‘My favourite activity was sailing as it was windy so the boat really got up a lot of speed.’
Rhys Page said, ‘I liked the water!’
Lucy Hanley believed, ‘It was very good. I got to know different people and worked with them to be successful in the different tasks. I loved kayaking down the slide with 7 people on it.’
