Enrichment Week - Glass Sculpting

Monday 18 July 2011

During Enrichment Week this year a group of pupils worked with a glass sculptor, Ken Howell. The pupils were shown glass colouring techniques using frit and stringers; plus the technique of glass engraving. The pupils were then able to experiment with the different techniques making a range of samples. From these experiments the pupils then made a final piece of work which will be displayed in the Art & Design exhibition.

The pupils really enjoyed working with glass as it is so very different to any material they have used before. ‘I have really enjoyed the week as it has been fun and creative.’ Anna Read

The pupils visited Ken Howell’s studio in Greater Malvern at the beginning of the week. This gave the pupils insight into how an artist works, the problems that they face in producing work for a client and running a business. The pupils felt privileged to work with Ken, especially after seeing his work and being able to hold and ask questions about his pieces of work.

The week was very rewarding and the pupils worked exceptionally hard. They had to be reminded that it was lunch time and home time. A pupil in the group really summarises the experiences of all the pupils. ‘My experience of Enrichment Week has been exhilarating and a wonderful experience’. Isabeau Hodgkiss
