On Saturday 10 September a group of intrepid adventurists from Cirencester Deer Park School descended the fantastic abseil location of Avon Gorge. The area used for the abseil is called Sea Walls and pupils and staff enjoyed the great views up toward Clifton Suspension Bridge and the River Avon as they got kitted up for their journey down!
The reason for this abseil drop of eighty-two feet (twenty-five metres!) was to help raise money for the expedition to South America that a group of volunteer pupils will be going on in the summer of 2012 in order to carry out valuable, sustainable and positive community and environmental work in areas in need of support.
Pupils and staff have been collecting sponsorship money over the summer and as the morning of the big descent arrived there was a mixture of feelings; excitement but also terror! The group were walked up to the top of the 25m high gorge and one by one they made their way down. It was difficult as there were various bushes and rocks in the way, not to mention the overhangs that couldn’t be seen clearly until you approached them. However, we all managed to make it down to the bottom, including Miss Dovey (History Teacher) who made it down to gasps of horror as she lost her footing near the bottom and comically smacked into the side of the rock face.
Sophie Collins said 'it was an amazing experience, that I thoroughly enjoyed, I would definitely do this again but also people were very generous and it really helped me raise money for the trip to Brazil and Argentina!'
The group would like to thank all the generous donors who sponsored the abseil and to Outlook Expedition for organising such an enjoyable and thrilling event.
We are looking forward to seeing parents, friends and anyone with money to spend (!) at our Promises Auction on Friday 14 October.
