1945 Day - Friday 7 May

11th May 2010. On Saturday 8 May Britain, along with other European countries, marked the 65th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. On Friday 7 May, pupils at Cirencester Deer Park School had a unique opportunity to reflect on the legacy of The Second World War as staff at the school recreated the atmosphere of 1945 by suspending the normal timetable, dressing up and planning thought-provoking lessons based on the themes of legacy and reconciliation. Even the reception area was transformed. It was protected from blasts by sandbags and camouflage netting!

Ofsted Inspection

An Ofsted inspection team will be in school on Wednesday and Thursday. They will observe lessons, look at pupil work, talk to members of staff, groups of pupils and governors and then make a judgement as to what kind of school Deer Park is. They already have the impression that we are a very good school but we all have an important role to play.

International School News

27th April 2010. Due to the volcanic ash cloud, our Dutch partner school in Zoetermeer, Alfrink College, had to cancel their visit to Deer Park earlier this month but we are pleased to announce that the visit is now confirmed for mid May and we look forward to greeting our friends and making new acquaintances. Our Dutch partners are particularly interested in our work with building learning power, the development of the structure of our lessons, and pupils understanding of their own learning preferences. Rebecca Lillington, our Innovations Co-ordinator, has put together an exciting programme for our visitors. We are also pleased to announce that we have been invited to attend the pupil Model United Nations (MUNA) Conference in Holland in 2011 with other schools and colleges from across Europe.

Leading Edge

As part of our role as a Leading Edge School we are currently busy developing a number of projects which aim to promote good learning across the partnership.

In February, Connie Hill, Joe Edwards, Emma Spring, Sarah Cuthbert, Edward Glover and Naomi Riordan all spent a day at Kingshill School building their skills as pupil mentors or Learning Buddies. It was a fantastic day and the students found out a lot about identifying good learning skills in the classroom and providing feedback to their peers when they need support. The Learning Buddies will shortly commence a programme of work with some Year 8 pupils and allow them to reflect on their learning and building the 4 R’s skills of Resourcefulness, Resilience, Reciprocity and Reflectiveness into their lessons.
