On Friday 7 January 2011, pupils in Year 11 waited anxiously for the results of the mock examinations they sat in December. Before moving into the Atrium, Chiquita Henson, Headteacher, and David Clarke, Head of Key Stage 4, reflected on the pupils collective achievements and shared some of the headlines in an assembly designed to simulate the experience the pupils will go through in August when they will collect their actual GCSE results.
Unfortunately, due to central government funding cuts, the Youth Parliament election has been postponed. The good news, however, is that the Youth Parliament itself will continue and Deer Park still provides the representative for Stroud and the Cotswolds. Tessa Barrett was asked by the Parliament to step into the shoes of ex-Deer Parkian Andrew Stallabrass as the 1st runner up in last year’s election.
Snow may look pretty but we know it is a major inconvenience to people who have to travel. We also know that for working parents when the school has to close this presents further problems with regard to childcare. So why do schools close when it snows when most other businesses manage to stay open?
Although the heavy frosts at the end of November and at the beginning of December transformed our school site into a winter wonderland, we officially opened the festive season with our annual Carol Concert in the Parish Church on Monday 13 December. Again members of our Expressive Arts team excelled themselves and the school’s choir and ensembles set the tone beautifully.

Design teacher Roger Martin retires after 37 years at Cirencester Deer Park School. Mr Martin will undoubtedly be greatly missed when he leaves the school for the last time as teacher on Friday 17 December 2010.
Head teacher, Chiquita Henson reflected, ‘We will be very sorry to lose Mr Martin from the team as he has become an integral part of the school. He is a popular member of staff and former pupils who visit the school frequently ask after him and reminisce about their times in his tutor group and the care, guidance and support he provided.’

It’s been a busy term for the English Faculty. Three Year 11 classes have sat their English Language exams six months early and we anxiously await their results in January. Revision is still running at full speed for all Year 11 pupils for Literature. We have a number of things that pupils can do to help themselves. Pupils can come along on a Thursday afternoon, have a cup of tea and a biscuit and talk about their favourite characters in the texts they have studied. There are a number of past papers available in the office for pupils to come and collect and have a go at. Also we are delighted to welcome back some former pupils into Year 11 assemblies to talk about studying English at A Level and how to revise for GCSE.
