PE

A high-quality PE curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve them. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy, active lifestyles. Discovering what they like to do, what their aptitudes are at school, and how and where to get involved in physical activity helps them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity.

PE helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences that PE offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging situations.

Physical Education is at the forefront of life at Deer Park School. It has become a hugely successful and popular subject which continues to grow and improve every year.

KS3 PE

In years 7 to 9 pupils engage in a variety of different sports from traditional games such as Football, Rugby, Hockey and Netball through to less common activities like Lacrosse, Health Related Exercise, Dance and Trampolining. Each year the pupils will build on their knowledge from the previous year so that they can develop their skills and ability levels. PE is mixed gender in year 7 but then becomes single sex in years 8 and 9. Pupils are also split into ability groups for the boys in year 8 and 9.

KS4

In years 10 to 11 pupils start to take on more responsibility for their own learning and physical development. They also revert back to mixed PE and are also mixed ability. They are encouraged to lead elements of their own lessons and take on the role of a coach as well as a learner. They also have the opportunity to take part in double PE where they can be taken off site to play Squash, Golf and even Rock Climbing. The PE Faculty have introduced a Junior Sports Leader Award into the curriculum which is a nationally recognised award for young people demonstrating sports leadership skills. We have also included a diluted version of this award for pupils who don't want to follow this course for a whole year - this is called the Deer Park Coaching Award. This award focuses heavily on leading and coaching young pupils from the Primary Schools in the surrounding area. It has proven to be very successful and more and more pupils are choosing this option each year.

We have a variety of PE clubs and practice sessions running at lunchtimes and after school.

The PE Faculty boast an impressive range of facilities and resources which have helped the pupils to excel in a large number of sports. They have a floodlit Astro-turf pitch, a second small Astro-turf area, extensive playing fields, a fully equipped and generously sized Gym, a large Sports Hall and an Atrium area available for use. The ICT development in PE at Deer Park is outstanding. The school is regularly host to a number of representatives from other PE Departments across the county and beyond for demonstrating how effective ICT can be in improving the teaching and learning of pupils.
