Textiles

Through studying Textiles at Deerpark School, pupils learn to be creative and reflective designers. They explore a wide range of techniques and processes, in order to become resourceful practitioners, sharing ideas and inspiration. Above all, pupils develop the ability to be resilient :- to persevere and to become fully involved in GCSE projects which focus on the abilities and interests of the individual.

KS3 Textiles

Year 7 Textiles
Design and manufacture a creative Textiles Book Cover. Design two abstract and two ‘nature’ themed book covers. Choose one to develop as a watercolour painting. This design will become a screen print onto cotton cloth. The printed book cover is embellished with hand embroidery, to add colour, texture and detail. Finally, the book cover is assembled, and the finished product evaluated. Homeworks include a stained glass window design, based on the work and ideas of William Morris, and a tea-towel design, inspired by ‘the kitchen’.

Year 8 Textiles
Design and manufacture a funky cushion cover, using recycled denim. Create a final design on paper, and use a wide variety of surface decoration techniques :-batik, appliqué, existing features, denim stripes and machine embroidery. The use of the sewing machine is a feature of this project. Finally, the cushion cover is assembled from up to nine recycled and decorated denim squares, and the finished product is evaluated. Homeworks include a design for a bag, which could be manufactured from recycled denim, and research into recycled denim textiles products.

Year 9 Textiles
Design and manufacture a pair of original board shorts, or ‘baggies’. Research existing products and produce three initial ideas in colour. Choose one to develop as a final design. Cut out fabric using a block pattern, and sew seams by machine. Create a paper stencil and screen print the shorts. Make notes on fabrics and fibres. Finally, finish waist band and hem, and complete with a computer transfer. The accurate use of the sewing machine is a feature of this project. Homeworks include research into shorts designs and logos, and ‘ My favourite Garment ‘- a drawing and description of what you most like to wear.

KS4 Textiles

In Year 10, GCSE Textiles pupils complete four modules. The pupils further develop the practical skills acquired in KS3, and broaden design experience in preparation for the AQA Textiles Design and Technology exam in Year 11.

During the first of the four modules, pupils will design and manufacture a cushion cover, based on the work of an artist.

The second module involves the design and manufacture of a bag, to include surface decoration inspired by ‘Another Culture’.

The third module is an exploration of interiors and textile products aimed at children.

Finally, we look at fashion design and garment construction, including the use of commercial patterns, CAD and CAM and industrial production methods.

Pupils finish year 10 with the ability to think creatively and independently. They are equipped with the necessary knowledge and practical skills required to achieve their full potential at GCSE.
